7-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climb

Lemosho starts on the quiet western side of the mountain and crosses the Shira Plateau before joining the southern circuit. The 7-day version keeps the route's beautiful scenery and good acclimatisation profile with one day less than the 8-day climb.

It suits reasonably fit first-time climbers who want a quieter start than Machame. A hotel night before and after the climb is included.

Your itinerary

Every itinerary can be adjusted to your pace and interests — just ask.

A scenic drive around the western side of the mountain to Londorossi Gate for registration, then on to the trailhead. Walk through quiet, untouched rainforest to Mti Mkubwa (“Big Tree”) Camp, watching for colobus monkeys and turacos. About 6 km, 3–4 hours.

Overnight Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650 m)Meals Lunch, Dinner

Climb out of the forest into giant heather and open moorland, then cross the Shira Plateau, an ancient collapsed volcano, with your first wide views of Kibo's glaciers. A long but rewarding day. About 16 km, 7–8 hours.

Overnight Shira 2 Camp (3,850 m)Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The most important acclimatisation day. Climb to the 4,630 m Lava Tower for lunch, then walk down into the Barranco Valley, past forests of giant groundsels, to sleep almost 700 m lower. Climbing high and sleeping low prepares your body for summit night. About 10 km, 6–8 hours.

Overnight Barranco Camp (3,960 m)Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Start the day on the Barranco Wall, a short hands-on scramble that looks harder than it is: your guides show you every step. Then follow the ridges and valleys below the southern glaciers to Karanga Camp, with a quiet afternoon to rest. About 5 km, 4–5 hours.

Overnight Karanga Camp (3,995 m)Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A short climb over rocky ground to Barafu, the base camp for the summit. Arrive by lunchtime, check your gear with your guide, have an early dinner and sleep for a few hours before the summit attempt. About 4 km, 3–4 hours.

Overnight Barafu Camp (4,673 m)Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Wake around 11 pm for tea and biscuits and start climbing by headlamp at midnight. After 6–7 hours you reach Stella Point on the crater rim as the sun rises, then walk about an hour more to Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m, the highest point in Africa. After photos at the summit sign, walk down to Barafu for a rest and a meal, then on to Mweka Camp. About 17 km, 12–15 hours.

Overnight Mweka Camp (3,100 m)Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

An easy walk down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate and say goodbye to your crew. We drive you back to your hotel for a hot shower and a celebration. About 10 km, 3–4 hours.
