Tour Overview

Nicknamed the “Whiskey” route, the Machame Route is popularized as being somewhat difficult and more expensive than the Marangu Route. Among all the routes to scale Kilimanjaro, it stands out as one of the best in terms of acclimatization and overall experience.

The Machame Route is considered challenging and is better suited for more adventurous trekkers with some hiking or backpacking experience. It is scenically beautiful and varied, offering stunning views and diverse landscapes. However, its popularity means there are often many trekkers, which can detract from the solitude and splendor.

The route approaches the summit from the southwest and descends via the Mweka Route, rewarding climbers with views of the expansive Shira Plateau, an optional scramble up Lava Tower, a climb up the Great Barranco Wall, and a traverse beneath Kilimanjaro’s southern ice field.

Though steeper in certain sections than the Marangu and Rongai routes, the Machame Route is physically demanding but provides excellent opportunities for acclimatization with plenty of “walk high, sleep low” segments. This challenging trek takes climbers through five diverse climatic zones and offers the option to split the pre-summit day climb, allowing climbers to rest before the final ascent.
